Placerville Christmas Parade
7 DEC 2104

We are guests of the Placerville American Legion Post 119.  We had 10 members support the event and a  good time was
had by all in this historic California Gold Country town.  The weather even cooperated!  The Sheriff looks like he was
checking for license and registration!
Thanks to Rich Buzen, Mike Whitten, Jim Stein, Curt Knapp, Greg Hutson, Tom Inks, Ken Fritz, Jim Cunningham, Ed White ,
and George Larson for participating in this last event of 2014.
Merry Christmas to all and looking forward to and exciting 2015

Corvettes for Vets at Red Hawk Casino, Placerville
19 OCT 2014

Lots of Corvettes and lots of veterans attended this event.  Curt Knapp, Al Doucette, Ken Clark, Ken Fritz, Greg Hutson, Dave
Anderson, and Ed Morris helped out.  Our local USAA rep also stopped by.  We also met Kevin Carey from Wheelers for the
Wounded.  They offer 4-wheel recreation to wounded veterans.  You can contact Kevin through:

POW/MIA Day at Fair Oaks VFW
27 SEP 2014

Members of the California Chapter North are proud of their new sandwich board describing the history and capabilities of
their static UH-1C.  Here they're lined up during their latest display at the Fair Oaks VFW POW/MIA event on 27 SEP.
Left to right it's Mike Nord, Ken Fritz, Ken Lake, Curt Knapp, Greg Hutson, and Ed Morris.

California Capitol Airshow
Mather Airfield
6-7 SEP 2014

5 SEP - Setting up in the Warbirds parking area the day before

7 SEP - Our crew gets some help from the Sacramento Kings cheerleaders!

The CCN display at the 2014 California Capital Airshow was very successful.   This Airshow  draws 100,000+ visitors over
the 2 days. We estimate that we had 700-1000 adults and kids climb on board each day and many more came by to learn
more about our Huey.  We even had a new sign displayed with our aircraft history. Dave Anderson, Al Doucette, Jim Clark,
Greg Hutson, and Curt Knapp survived the long days and 95+ degree heat to connect with Vietnam helicopter pilots,
veterans, and the American public.
Helicopters were well represented at the show with the 25th DIV's UH-1H that is based out of Concord, CA and performed
in the airshow.  The Sacramento County Sheriff's UH-1H (another Vietnam veteran) was also on static display as well as a
California National Guard Blackhawk and a fully restored OH-13.  Many other vintage airplanes were displayed and flown
including the Patriot L-39 Jet Team.

Nicolaus Labor Day Parade
1 SEP 2014

Our Huey was parked for tours at the after parade picnic.   This was a fun event that we have participated in for the past
few years.
Note the tree branches on the rotor system after arriving at this tight LZ!

Thanks to Curt Knapp, Ed Morris, Jim Stein, Jim Clark, Al Doucette, Greg Hudson, Mike Whitten, and Mike Nord for making
this a great event.

Huey Trailer Work

Thanks to Ken Fritz, Jim Clark, Frank Kulhavy, and Curt Knapp.

VHPA Reunion in Louisville, KY
1 - 6 July 2014

Curt Knapp &  Ken Lake                                                              Curt Knapp & Bruce Horton

VHPA-CCN members Ken Lake, Al Doucette, Curt Knapp, Mike Nord, Ed White, and Jim Barger represented the chapter at
the National Reunion.  Curt snapped a couple of pictures at the reunion and sent links (see below) for those who wish to
see more and the Combat Assault re-enactment.
Look forward to hearing All Doucette's time at the VHCMA reunion in San Antonio, on the way to Louisville.  Al was going to
hook-up with some of his old crew members and have dinner with his two daughters who live in the area.  Ken Lake owes
his baseball stadium score card tally.  He and his wife planned to attend as many major league stadiums as they could on
the way to and back from Louisville.
Curt spent his 24 hours at the reunion mostly with Bruce Horton, who was his crew chief that kept his Huey in the air
despite Curt's best efforts to tear it up at LZ Sally in 1968.  Bruce went on to flight school and went back in the front seat in
1971-72.  This was Bruce's first VHPA reunion.

VHPA-CCN BBQ in Orangevale, CA
5 July 2014

Ken Fritz hosted an afternoon BBQ at his house in Orangevale for those members who did not make it to Louisville this
year.  After great hamburgers, hot dogs, and of course beer and wine, Mike Whitten (A Past VHPA National President) led
us all in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Curt Knapp made it back from Louisville and gave us a brief report on how the reunion
went.  We all had a great time, swapped "true" stories of our helicopter experiences and discussed how we might charter
FDR's former yacht the "Potomac" next year and get some publicity for the VHPA at a Giants game.  Mike and Dave
Anderson "volunteered"  to put a plan together on how we can recruit the 75 -90 people we would need to make this plan
feasible.

"Vettes 4 Vets" at California Automobile Museum, Sacramento, CA
26 May 2014

"Vettes 4 Vets" was sponsored by the California Automobile Museum on Memorial Day.  Ken Smith (VHPA-CCN member
and Museum Docent) asked us to attend this event.  There were several military jeeps and other vehicles shown as well as
many beautiful Corvettes and vintage muscle cars.  As usual our Huey was a big hit with the crowd.

YES- we were parked under a freeway overpass!

Ken Fritz, Curt Knapp, Tom Inks, Ken Smith, Ken Lake, Al Doucette, Dave Anderson, Ed Morris, Greg Hutson, and our newest
member Barry Fitzpatrick helped out.

Meet the Machines at Rancho Cordova
10 May 2014

We displayed the Huey for the Rancho Cordova Parks and Recreation District "Meet the machines" Day.

Dave Anderson, Al Doucette, Curt Knapp, Ken Lake, and Ed Morris all helped out.

Over a 3 1/2 hour period we had
eight hundred to a thousand kids and parents enjoy getting up close and personal to a real
helicopter.  We definitely had the longest lines of any of the other machines on display!  Among the many other machines
displayed, the restored Jeep and Gama Goat US Army vehicles were a big hit with the kids and the Segway 2 wheel
scooter rides were a definite highlight.  Good job Rancho Cordova.  We all had a good time.

Ed and Al also won raffle prizes!

Traveling Wall - State Capitol, Sacramento, CA
27 FEB 2014

Shown in the picture is Col. Corey Martin, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander at Travis AFB, offers his words as the guest
speaker at the opening ceremony of The Wall That Heals, a Vietnam Memorial Wall replica at the State Capitol in
Sacramento.  California Assembly member, Jim Frazier (a Vietnam Vet) sponsored the event.   George Larson, Greg
Hutson, and Dave Anderson from VHPA-CCN attended the ceremony and represented the VHPA.

American Heritage Day - Fair Oaks, CA
17 FEB 2014

We had a good time with the COL John Haslet's Delaware Regiment. The original regiment dates back to 1776. They are
dressed as Delaware Continental soldiers and with their group of civilian camp followers, trappers, traders, French
military, and Eastern Indians, they set up a pretty interesting camp on the lawn. We also had George Washington, Abe
Lincoln, some British red coat soldiers, and a 1776 era marching band that played as a red, white and blue 13 star flag was
raised in the morning. Having this event at Mt Vernon Memorial Park was very appropriate.

Our Huey and our members (dressed in flight gear) were the real stars of this tribute to America on President's Day.  Al
Doucette (Minuteman 42) and Ken Fritz (Minuteman 17) flew with the 176th Assault Helicopter Co. out of Chu Lai, Republic
of Vietnam.

California Museum Day - Old Sacramento, CA
1 FEB 2014

Our Huey was the main attraction in front of the California Military Museum 1119 Second St., Old Sacramento.  Thirty
Sacramento area museums offered free or half-off admission all day during the 16th Annual Sacramento Museum Day.
"The biggest line I've ever seen just to sit in the cockpit of our Huey.  We had more than 30 men, women and kids per hour
changing seats and taking photos from about 0900-1600."

Thanks to Ken Fritz, Al Doucette, Jim Stein, Ken Lake, Jim Clark, Ed Morris, and Curt Knapp for working the California
Military Museum Huey display plus the Huey wash and maintenance the day before.  We added or replaced missing and
worn parts: overhead sound blanket ( finally ! ); idle cutoff switch; seat belt anchors; cyclic boot; and that left-hand pilot's
seat belt that was always too short.

Holiday Party - Fairfield, CA
11 JAN 2014

The annual Holiday Party was held at Chevy's Restaurant in Fairfield, CA.  Thanks to Ken Lake and Mike Whitten for
organizing this event.  This was a lightly attended event, but those who did come enjoyed a great Mexican buffet and
conversation.  A few of us stayed over at the Hilton Garden Inn across the street from Chevy's.  Can you pick out the 3 Past
Presidents of VHPA - Joe Blitzke, Ken Fritz, and Mike Whitten?  We are the only VHPA chapter with 4 VHPA past presidents
as members!
